Wedding on Lake Garda · Salò and Valtènesi

Giulia is Italian, Carl is English, and they live in England. They came all the way back to Lake Garda to get married: both got ready at Hotel Bellerive in Salò, the civil ceremony took place at the town hall right on the lakefront, and the celebration moved to the Redaelli De Zinis estate, in the hills of Calvagese della Riviera.

What stays with me most from this day are the speeches. In England it’s normal for many people to speak at the reception; in Italy it happens far less. That day the bride’s brother, their friends and their witnesses all took the floor, and not one of them was too many. One after another, they were the most moving part of the day.

In those moments I just try not to be noticed. I was listening too, while photographing the faces of everyone listening.
